For A-level German Paper 2: Writing, focus on the following key areas:
1. Essay Writing:
Topic Preparation: Be prepared to write essays on key themes such as family, education,
technology, society, culture, or current issues. Understand how these topics are treated in German-
speaking countries.
Clear Structure: Organize your essay with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Present arguments logically, and ensure each paragraph develops a new point.
Argument Development: Develop your argument fully. Don’t just give your opinion—explain why
you hold that view, provide examples, and use evidence where possible.
Balance of Opinion: Be able to discuss multiple viewpoints. If asked for your opinion on an issue,
consider both sides before concluding.

,2. Grammar:
Complex Sentence Structures: Use a variety of tenses (present, past, future, subjunctive) and
complex grammatical structures (e.g., relative clauses, conditional sentences, passive voice).
Accurate Grammar: Pay attention to subject-verb agreement, correct word order, adjective
endings, and the use of correct prepositions.
Range of Vocabulary: Incorporate a wide range of vocabulary to express ideas clearly and
precisely. Avoid repetition by using synonyms and varying your sentence structures.
Subjunctive and Modality: Practice using the subjunctive mood (Konjunktiv) for hypothetical
situations and expressing wishes, doubts, or unreal conditions.
3. Writing Tasks:
One Essay, Two Questions: You will need to write one essay in response to one of two questions.
Choose the question you are most comfortable with or have the most knowledge about.
Topic Selection: Topics can range from politics, society, and history, to literature and film. Make
sure you have prepared on key themes often explored in German culture.
Linking Ideas: Use linking words (e.g., "deshalb," "darüber hinaus," "zudem") to ensure your essay
flows logically. Transition smoothly between ideas and paragraphs.
4. Translation:
Accuracy: You may be asked to translate a passage between German and English. Focus on
conveying the meaning rather than doing a word-for-word translation.
Contextual Understanding: Be careful with idiomatic expressions and ensure that the translation
sounds natural in both languages. Pay close attention to gender, case, and number.
5. Time Management:
Planning: Allocate time to plan your essay. Jot down key points and examples before starting to
write to ensure your response is well-structured.
Revision: Leave a few minutes at the end to review your work. Check for grammatical errors,
spelling mistakes, and clarity.
