Task 1: School Analysis

Cultural Competency and Social-Emotional Learning - D020

A. Analyze

A1. One group of students that seem to experience a significant amount of inequality is the

Hispanic/Latino group of students. If you look across the data given, they seem to be in school as they

need to be, but their test scores are amongst the lowest of all given data. For example, only 9% are

, chronically absent, which is the second lowest percentage of all groups. However, their test scores are at

only an average of 46%, which is by far the lowest group given. I believe this also goes back to the fact

that there is only one certified EL Teacher at the school. This teacher is probably overwhelmed by the

number of EL students and would not be able to help the other teachers learn ways to help the students

overcome the language barrier that most likely exists.

A2. Having taught in a school that had large numbers of EL students, and not speaking any other

language myself, I have seen how this can easily lead to inequality in the classroom. From my

experience, I have learned that using other students who can any amount of language at all is a

tremendous help to the students who cannot speak any English. I would pair them up any time that I

was able, and the students were willing, and would make sure that I let them know that they were

allowed to talk if they were helping the other students with translations. This not only helped the

student who could not speak English, but also gave the translating student more practice between the

two languages. Looking at this from a negative standpoint though, it can be viewed as putÝng more

stress on the student who is doing the helping as they are having to not only worry about doing their

work, but also in helping make sure others know what is going on also. I always tried to take this into

account when I was in this situation and made sure not to let it get to the point of the student becoming

stressed.

B. One leadership strategy that would recommend is promoting equity. If you as a leader

are pushing for equal access and treatment of all students no matter what race they come from, it will

be seen by your students and staff and slowly make for an all-around better environment. This also must

go as far as discipline and rules. You always need to make sure that all students, no matter if they are

Hispanic, non-Hispanic, students with disabilities or not, they all need to have the right to equal
