Department Heads act as leaders within the hierarchy of the total crew and their specific
departments and report to the Steward as well as communicate with the SHOW's
department heads.

ANSWER-Departments allow the total crew to be split up into skilled teams needed to
complete the job tasks for the day. Ex: Sound, Electrics, Rigging, Carpenters, etc.

Flat - ANSWER-A solid flat scenic element either flown or attached to the floor. Used to
give the appearance of solid structures or construction. Typically built at size: 4' x 8'

Flyman - ANSWER-The stage crew person charged with operating the counterweight
system in a Theatre.

Ghost light - ANSWER-A single light that is placed down center stage at the end of a
work call to signify that work is done. This light may also keep unfriendly spirits from
****ing with the rigging at night. Also used as a night light, so that if anyone happens to
be on stage when the house lights are off they will know where the edge of the stage is
and hopefully not fall.

Gridiron - ANSWER-A floor of steel channels usually located under the roof steel -
allows for multiple rigging locations and inspection access

Ground cloth - ANSWER-Fabric (usually Canvas) laid down on the floor of the stage as
a scenic element

Hand props - ANSWER-Props that are handled or carried by actors

Hat catcher - ANSWER-A cover for the orchestra pit, usually made out of Scrim
material. Historical significance: the way men used to applaud is by tossing their hat at
the stage. This scrim caught the thrown hats and protected musicians.

Head block - ANSWER-The pulley in a counterweight system that is directly above the
arbor. This pully is operated by the hand line and guides the lift wires to the loft blocks.

How and why was IATSE formed? - ANSWER-In 1886, New York TPU members went
on strike. The producers replaced the workers with subpar workers/strike breakers. The
actors of the show refused to work due to the sets being unstable. The solidarity of the
actors helped to accomplish getting acceptance of their requests.

In 1893, representatives from 11 cities met in New York to discuss the working
conditions of their peers. They vowed to support each other in an effort to allow for
better wages, and better working conditions.

The IATSE as we know it was established on July 17th, 1893.
