There are a few epidemiological parameters
Attack rate incidence in population at risk (number of people who became ill divided
by the number of people at risk for the illness).
Basic reproductive number (R0) is used to measure the transmission potential of a
disease. It is the average number of secondairy infections produced by a typical case of an
infection in a population where everyone is susceptible.
Case fatality rate a measure of the severity of a disease and is defined as the
proportion of reported cases of a specified disease condition which are fatal within a
specified time.
Attack rate, R0 and case fatality rate are very hard to estimate. This is because there are
also asymptomatic cases: a patient who is a carrier for a disease but experiences no
symptoms. Solution are modelling and serosurvey (take a lot of people and test for
antibodies). But still it are useful concepts to think about infectious diseases!!
