Overview of the Grade R Programme in South Africa
Grade R, also known as the Reception Year, is a vital part of the Foundation Phase in South
Africa. It serves as a preparatory year for formal schooling, focusing on the holistic development
of young learners. The curriculum emphasizes play-based learning and aims to develop the
following key areas:
• Language and Communication:
Building listening, speaking, and emergent literacy skills to foster a love for language and

• Mathematics:

Developing gross motor and then fine skills, emotional and social well-being, creativity, and

follow the provided weekly and daily planner. This planner will help you structure your lessons

1. Language Development Activities
New Vocabulary: Rain, Umbrella, Puddle, Clouds, Boots
Show pictures of each word and discuss their meanings.
Encourage learners to repeat the words and use them in sentences.
Ask learners to listen carefully as you read the story and identify these words.
Listening & Retelling:
After reading the story, ask questions:
What happened in the story?
Who were the characters?
What did they do when it rained?
Allow learners to retell the story in their own words.
Sequencing:
Provide learners with illustrated sequence cards and ask them to arrange the events in
order.
2. Mathematics Activities
Counting:
