Abstract
Anorexia Nervosa is a serious public health issue with contributory factors including
negative images from the media and the fashion industry, peer pressure and influence, and
negative health outcomes that can be extreme. Although in the minority, AN can also affect
older females and males as well. Co-morbidities include cardiovascular involvement, liver
function, and the nervous and skeletal systems, representing a significant burden on the
healthcare system (Carrot, 2019). Of course, this affects young adults in the prime of their lives
attending college and beginning their careers, making it an economic issue. Treatment
interventions include hospitalizations, outpatient facilities, pharmacology, counseling, family
therapy, and a care team including a nutritionist. A cost barrier apparently is a real issue, making
this a significant public health issue that needs to be addressed. More research needs to be done
to determine the effectiveness of family counselling and the use of health tracker apps and other
support therapies that address this social/economic issue.
