1. Using the SARA Model to Address Extortion and Kidnapping Cases
As the head of Visible Policing at a police station in Gauteng, my role is to ensure that
the police are addressing crime effectively and working to keep the community safe.
One of the strategies I would use to tackle cases of extortion and kidnapping in the area
is the SARA model of problem-solving policing. SARA stands for Scanning, Analysis,
Response, and Assessment, and it’s a structured approach to problem-solving that
allows us to better understand and address specific crimes in our area.
Scanning
In the scanning phase, I would first identify the patterns of extortion and kidnapping in
the community. This would involve looking at the crime statistics, reviewing past cases,
and talking to my officers about any recurring issues or trends they may have noticed.
I’d also take note of any hotspots, such as areas or locations where these crimes are
happening more frequently, and gather data on who the victims are. The goal is to
understand the full scope of the problem—how often these crimes happen, who is
involved, and where they are taking place.
Analysis
Once we have a clear picture of the problem, the next step is to analyze it. This is where
we try to understand why extortion and kidnapping are happening in the area. We would
analyze factors such as gang activity, economic pressures, or any other underlying
