SOL T PLAATJE – MHUDI

COMPLETE REVISION GUIDE

, INTRODUCTION:

S
ol Plaatje’s Mhudi is the first full-length novel in English to have been written by a black South
African and is widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most important literary works. Set
in the 1830s, it tells the tale of Mhudi and Ra-Thaga, a romantic story set against a violent
backdrop of war between Barolong and Matebele, complicated by the intrusions of Boer trekkers with
whom the Barolong form an alliance. It is notable, among other things, for the way Plaatje uses the
past to explore the roots of the oppression and injustice suffered by his people a century later, when
the book was written. In this sense it represents a fictional exploration of the political campaigning
evident in his journalism and in his famous political book, Native Life in South Africa, published in
1916.

Mhudi today has near-iconic status. It was quite widely reviewed at the time of its publication in 1930,
but after that it was largely ignored or criticised for its use of ‘stilted language’ or its lack of realism. But
from the 1970s its importance has been increasingly recognised, and it was republished in South
Africa in 1975. Since then several more editions have been published, and it has been translated
into
four other languages. Mhudi seemed to speak particularly to ‘the new South Africa’ in the 1990s, the time
of South Africa’s political transformation, and academic and literary critics took a special interest.

,Mhudi (summary)

The Legacy of Sol Plaatje: Writer, Activist, and
Pioneer
Sol Plaatje, a pioneering black South African writer, created the first known novel by a black South
African, "MHUDI," in 1930. His work in literature, journalism, and activism led him to become the
first general secretary of the African National Congress. Plaatje's accomplishments include
translating Shakespeare's works into Tswana and having the future national anthem recorded. He
passed away in 1932.

The Courage and Resilience of Mhudi
"Mhudi" is a South African novel depicting the events and experiences of the protagonist, Mhudi,
during a war between the Barolong nation and the Matabele. The story reveals the cause of the war,
challenges preconceived notions of the Matabele, and portrays the courage, resilience, and
relationships among the characters during the conflict.

Interpreting Bantu Folk-Tales: Sol T. Plaatje's
Literary Mission
The text discusses the author Sol T. Plaatje's objective to interpret and print Bantu folk−tales for
readers and Bantu schools, in hopes of cultivating a love for art and literature in the Vernacular.
Plaatje, a renowned South African man of letters, has previously used his writing to support his
research journeys. The text also provides a brief background on Plaatje's career, including his work
as a court interpreter, newspaper editor, and Mines Labour Supply Company representative.

"The Legacy of Solomon Plaatje: A Champion for
South African Blacks"
Plaatje founded Tsala ea Becoana and later Tsala ea Batho, engaging in politics and fighting for
South African blacks. In Britain, he published works, gave lectures, and met influential activists. After
returning to South Africa, he continued journalism and politics but faced challenges due to changing
political climates. He passed away in 1932, and his only published novel, Mhudi, was completed by
1920.

, Mhudi: A Pioneering Figure in South African
History
Mhudi, written by Plaatje, is a significant work in South African literature and society. The novel
explores themes of dispossession and revenge while showcasing Plaatje's mastery of multiple
languages. Despite delayed recognition, his career as a writer, journalist, and politician has solidified
his legacy as a pioneering figure in South African history.

Mhudi: A Literary Portrayal of Native Life in South
Africa
Mhudi, an epic of Native life in South Africa, depicts the historical processes of settlement,
migration, cultural change, and the impact of technological advancements. The story follows the life
of Mhudi and her husband Ra−Thaga, starting and ending with contrasting images of pastoral life
and the new technological era. Throughout the story, Plaatje uses motifs to contrast individual lives
against historical events and different cultures. The historical span of the story covers significant
events from 1832 to 1837, with Plaatje adjusting the order to emphasize key themes. Mhudi serves
as a literary portrayal of Native life in South Africa, with prophecy presented as apocalyptic,
presenting history under the guise of the end times.

Exploring Themes of Prophecy and Trauma: The
Legacy of Sol T. Plaatje's Mhudi
Mhudi, a novel by Sol T. Plaatje, explores themes of prophecy, social and political turmoil, and
individual trauma. Drawing from African and Western literary traditions, it contributes to the
continuity of South African literature. The book's vivid language and proto−feminist perspective
demonstrate Plaatje's imaginative sympathy and deep humanism.

The Evolution of Plaatje's Mhudi: From Mission
Book to Subversive Work
Plaatje's style in Mhudi combines elements from the Bible, Victorian poetic diction, and his own
political and class background. The novel has evolved over time, from its origins as a mission book
to its recognition as a significant African literary work. A re−publication of Mhudi in 1975, based on
an original typescript, revealed a more radical and subversive text, suggesting that initial censorship
had altered its original intention.
