Introduction
Purpose: This report contains two comparison examples of home prices in 2019. The first
example is a comparison of home prices for the east north central region compared to the
national average. The second example is a comparison between the east north central region
and the pacific region.
Sample: The random sample of data includes 100 homes sold in 2019 from the east north central
region and the pacific region of the United States. The east north central region of five states
includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The pacific region of five states
includes Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington. The data from both regions
includes the home listing price, square footage per home, and price per square foot.
Questions and type of test:
Hypothesis 1: Home prices in the East North Central region are lower than the national
average. Using a right-tailed alternative hypothesis test, results show the national average is
greater than the average of the east north central region.
A. The population parameter is all homes sold nationwide in 2019.
B. The average national home sales price is higher than the average price for the east
north central region.
C. The inference test uses a hypothesis test for mean with a test statistic of -13.13257
Hypothesis 2: The average square footage price per home in the East North Central region is
the same as the Pacific region average. Using a two-tailed alternative hypothesis test, results
