Lab Report Format Expectations
Utilize college level grammar and formaṄng when answering text based questions.
Report all equations in a proper mathematical format, with the correct signs and symbols.
Submissions with incomplete or improperly formatted responses may be rejected.

Pre-Lab Questions
• In this lab, you will investigate two gas laws that relate pressure, temperature and pressure. In
your own words, explain Charles’ Law. When doing so, explain the relationship that exists
between temperature, volume and pressure in the context of this law. Ensure you discuss each
of those variables.
Charles law is used to understand the effects of temperature change, and how they effect the
volume of a gas that is left within a mass at a constant pressure. Temperature is used to
decrease volume while volume is used to decrease the exhistance of a gas, and if the
temperature increases the volume of gas particles. The existance of temperature and volume
rising also either increases or deceases the pressure of gas.

• In your own words, describe Boyle’s Law in the context of pressure, volume and temperature.
Ensure that you explain the relationship of each of those variables to one another in the context
of this law.
Boyles law is used when the temperature of gas particle are unable to maintain the same
amount of pressure and volume because if the volume if the pressure increases then the volume
of gas will decrease. This is because there is no temperature involved with the volume and
pressure, and causes the pressure to be greater than the volume.

EXPERIMENT 1: CHARLES’ LAW
Introduction Questions
• In this experiment you will observe changes in volume with changes in temperature. For
temperature and volume to be linearly related to one another, what must be true about
pressure?
The temperature and volume is linear according to Charles's Law, which states that at constant
pressure, the volume of gas is directly equivalent to its temperature measured in Kelvin.

• Is it possible to cool a gas down to absolute zero? If you tried to, what obstacles would you run
into?
No because even if I tried to, the gas would only return to a liquid substance. Obstacles I would
run into would be to return the liquid back to room temperature, then I would need to put it
somwhere below freezing point, and wait for a while to see parts of the water turning solid,
causing the water particles to turn into ice.

• Suppose during your experiment the temperature goes up, but your observed volume goes
down. Based on your previous responses, you would know this is incorrect and an experimental
error has occurred. What do you think might cause this error? What would you do to fix this?
Their could be issues with the thermometer, a leak in the container, measurement problems, or
the wrong amount of gas within the experiment. It is best that I test my equipement to ensure
that it is working properly before measuring, having the right container to hold the substance,
and to observe the reaction of the gas works correctly in the experiment.

Data and Observations
Input the three temperatures you used in this lab, and the corresponding volumes you observed at each
into Table 3, below.
Table 1: Temperature vs. Volume of Gas Data

Temperature Conditions Temperature (ºC) Volume (mL)
Room Temperature 23'C 6mL
Hot Water 39'C 2mL
Ice Water 11'C 1.2mL
