(Front) Above the fold - ANS -♣ literally what is above the fold
♣ most important spot
♣ usually beginning of 2 or 3 stories
♣ hardly ever to do you see a completed story - usually one headline if it is a huge story
(Front) The flag - ANS -♣ logo portion of the front page, will look the same everyday
(Front) The ear and the other promo spots - ANS -♣ upper right corner
♣ promo spot - promotes a story that is inside the paper
(Inside) The Mast - ANS -a box inside the newspaper that has general information about the
publication such as names and contacts of editors, publishers, etc.
Advertisements - ANS -o Display - the regular kind
Classified - a big money-maker (but not anymore)
The News Hole - ANS -to The space that's left over for news after the advertising goes in
♣ Ads go in first - 60 to 70 percent
The space left is 30-40 percent
Understand news vs. opinion and recognize examples for each of the three kinds of opinion. To
whom do each of these three types belong? - ANS -In a good ethical article the news and the
opinion are kept separate.
-Editorials- official opinion of the newspaper itself. Depends on paper--who writes it.
-Columns- opinion of the writer- picture of the writer w/ name
-Letters to the Editor- Opinions of readers, editors like them because it allows for good
discussion in the community
Understand what a chain is - ANS -Corporations that control a significant number of
newspapers
Which is more prevalent now, morning or afternoon newspapers? Why? - ANS -Morning, most
afternoon papers died once tv was invented.
Which U.S. newspaper is considered the most prominent? It is a "newspaper of record." - ANS

Why did so many afternoon newspapers die? - ANS -After television and newspapers with debt
