PESTICIDE LABELING - TERMS TO

Active Ingredient (a.i.) - ANSWER-A chemical in a pesticide product that affects or
controls the target pest
Acute Effects - ANSWER-Illnesses or injuries that appear soon (within 24 hours) after
exposure to a pesticide or combination of pesticides
Allergic Effects - ANSWER-Harmful effects, such as a skin rash or asthma, that some
people develop when exposed to a substance that does not cause the same reaction in
others
Brand Name - ANSWER-The trademarked name given to a pesticide product by the
manufacturer. It often includes information about the formulation and percentage of
active ingredient (ex. Sevin 50% WP)
Chemical Name - ANSWER-The technical name that identifies the chemical formula
and structure of a pesticide active ingredient (ex. 1-naphthyl N-methyl carbamate)
Common (Chemical) Name - ANSWER-A short name given to a pesticide active
ingredient that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has officially accepted (ex.
carbaryl)
Delayed Effects - ANSWER-Illnesses or injuries that appear more than 24 hours after
exposure to a pesticide or combination of pesticides
Distributor Products - ANSWER-End-use pesticides produced and registered by a
manufacturer or formulator and sold under a different name by a distributor
Emergency Exemption from Registration - ANSWER-A Section 18 exemption that
allows the sale and use of a certain pesticide product for a specific nonregistered
purpose for a specified period. EPA grants these exemptions at the request of a state
regulatory agency. EPA will issue a Section 18 exemption ONLY when there is no other
feasible way to respond to a pest emergency
Establishment Number - ANSWER-The number assigned by EPA to each pesticide
production facility
