1. A student was asked to write all of the structural (constitutional) isomers of hexane. His
answer is shown below. Some of them he drew more than once, but in ways that look different.
Group all 12 compounds in five group, each containing the same compound.
2. Carefully sketch the honeycomb grid below lightly (unless you printed it), and draw as many
examples of heptane using that grid as you can by writing bolder lines, making them look
different as much as possible by letting them twist and turn in various ways. One is drawn for
you, and heptane is drawn in the most common way for you as a reference. If time allows,
draw more possibilities that don’t follow such a nice grid.
