Experiment 2: Is volume conserved? “The Sneaky Ethanol Molecules”
Introduction:
The Law of Conservation of Mass, discovered by Antoine Lavoisier in 1785, stated that matter
can neither be destroyed nor created, thus, it is conserved. However, it is unsure if we can say the
same thing about volume. Can it neither be destroyed nor created? Is it conserved? Thus, in this
experiment, we are using water and ethanol, individually and combined in different ratios, to
determine whether the volume is conserved or not.
Materials:
1. 10 mL graduated cylinder: to use the measure out experimented solutions.
2. 25 mL graduated cylinder: to use the measure out experimented solutions.
3. Soap: to use to wash apparatus.
4. 1 mL acetone: to use to wash apparatus.
5. Paper towel: to use to dry apparatus.
6. Water: experimented solution.
7. Ethanol: experimented solution.
8. Pasteur Pipet: to use to transfer small quantities of liquid accurately.
9. Test tube brushes: to use to clean test tubes.
, 10. Digital scale: to use to measure the weight of pieces of apparatus and the weight of
solutions.
11. Beaker: to use to hold and pour solutions.
12. Lab Manual - to use the other provided materials (such as procedures, prior knowledge,
data tables, etc.).
Observations and Experimental
Part 1:
Water Ethanol
Mass of the cylinder (grams) 25.36 25.36
Mass of the cylinder + solution (gram 33.32 31.84
Mass of the solution (grams) 33.32 – 25.36 = 7.96 31.84 – 25.36 = 6.48
Volume of the solution (mL) 8 8
Density of the solution (g/mL) 7.96g / 8mL = 0.995 g/mL 6.48g / 8mL = 0.81 g/mL
