NSG C489 Task 1 Complete- Organizational Systems and Quality Leadership /NSG C489 Task 1 Complete- Organizational Systems and Quality Leadership. A. Understanding of Nursing Quality Indicators According to the American Nurses Association, nursing quality indicators are “measures and indicators that reflect the structure, processes and outcomes of nursing care.” (Montalvo,2007) In the scenario provided we meet a patient by the name of Mr. J who has been admitted to the hospital after suffering a fall at home that resulted in a hip fracture. When Mr. J’s daughter visits a week after his admission, she finds him lethargic, restrained to the bed, developing a pressure ulcer to his spine, and receiving food that his religion strictly prohibits him from eating. All of these things reflect nursing quality indicators. The drowsiness Mr. J is experiencing in the scenario has been attributed to pain medication, therefore it is the nursing quality indicator “pain assessment/ intervention” (Cherry, B., Jacob, S). Nowhere in the scenario does it mention that Mr. J is agitated or combative, it does, however, mention that he has suffered a recent fall resulting in a hip fracture and that he has a history of mild dementia. With this information, one can reasonably assume that the purpose of the restraint was to keep Mr. J from getting out of the bed without assistance and therefore presumably preventing any additional falls. Consequently, the restraint intervention falls under the nursing quality indicator “patient falls” as well as “physical restraints”.( Cherry, B., Jacob, S) When Mr. J arose from his bed, he was found to have a noticeably reddened area over his lower spine which indicates a developing pressure ulcer, therefore identifying the nursing quality indicator “hospital acquired pressure ulcers”( Cherry, B., Jacob, S). All of the nursing quality indicators listed above, in addition to the fact that Mr. J received pork, which his religion prohibits him from eating, will ultimately influence another nursing quality indicator which is “patient satisfaction”.( Cherry, B., Jacob, S) B. Advancing Quality Patient Care Studies have shown significant links between restraints and patient falls as well as restraints and hospital acquired pressure ulcers. (Farina-Lopez,2018) Though many medical professionals still view restraints as an effective method of fall prevention, it has been proven that not only do restraints NOT decrease the incidence of falls they actually contribute to serious patient injuries and increase mortality rates. (Farina-Lopez,2018) Physical restraints have also been proven to increase the incidence of hospital acquired pressure ulcers as they greatly limit
