Week 4 Pre-Work Simulation

Log into Simulation Learning System-Pediatric Nursing 1st edition on Evolve.




Click on Simulations, find PED 06: Haley Medvedev and click to open it. Click on Simulation
History upper right corner. Start Pre-Simulation. DO NOT click on Start Simulation. You will
only click on Start Simulation with your clinical instructor during live clinical time.




Explore the chart of your patient. You will be able to see provider charting, orders, MAR, etc. as
if you are the nurse caring for this child in an acute hospital setting. You will be using this
information during simulation to guide you in your assessment, clinical judgement,
communication with the child and family, and your prioritization of care. It is imperative that
you have a good understanding of the disease process, child’s status, orders, history, etc. before
we begin simulation so you may simulate care that you would provide in the hospital.
Access scenario 06: Haley Medvedev in the Simulation Learning System in Evolve. The
orders are on page 2-3 of this document. Please review the electronic health record (EHR) to
familiarize yourself with the patient’s history. Review Provider ChartsH & P, Progress

, Notes. Review Patient ChartingAdmission History. Special charts have pediatric pain
scales, fall scales, and a GCS. Review Order Results. The resources button will provide you
with access to Evolve’s Clinical Key and Clinical Pharmacology. These have pediatric drug
information that you will need to find safe ranges, dosages, etc. as your drug book does not
include pediatric information. You will be using the EHR to answer the following questions.

A change-of-shift report will be provided to you at the start of the simulation period. You
may utilize your text, drug book, and online resources in the Evolve Clinical Key or Clinical
Pharmacology. You will begin caring for Haley on Thursday at 1930.

Scenario

Allergies: None Weight: 13 lbs., 11 oz.

Haley Medvedev is a 5-month-old Caucasian female who was admitted directly from the
pediatrician's office to the hospital on Thursday at 1100 with a diagnosis of bronchiolitis.
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the suspected organism. Upon admission, Haley also
showed signs of dehydration and her parents reported that her oral intake has been limited for
several days. The scenario takes place Thursday evening. During this scenario, students will have
the opportunity to assess and monitor the infant patient with respiratory distress and prioritize
nursing interventions to optimize respiratory function.
