1. INTRODUCTION (150 words)
In 1994, South Africa’s transition from apartheid to democracy
marked a pivotal moment in the history of its education system.

, Under apartheid, education was racially segregated, with
policies designed to limit the opportunities available to Black
South Africans. The structure of the education system was
intentionally designed along racial lines, with different curricula
for white and non-white students. This historical context shaped
the educational landscape and was a major factor in post-

education, quality of education, and the need for equity and
inclusion were central to the debates on how to redress the
inequalities of the past. Teacher unions, political movements,
and educational reforms have played significant roles in shaping

progress made, and the ongoing challenges.


2. ACCESS TO EDUCATION (300 words)
Under apartheid, access to education was racially segregated,
and black students faced systemic barriers to receiving education
of the same quality as their white counterparts. The Bantu
Education Act of 1953 institutionalized this separation, ensuring
that black students were limited to inferior schooling. By 1994,
the country’s education system was still dealing with the legacy
of these policies, with vast disparities in the availability of
resources, trained teachers, and educational infrastructure
between racially segregated schools. Access to education in
rural areas was even more limited due to geographic and
economic constraints.
Post-apartheid, the government undertook several reforms to
