What is an operating system?
An operating system manages hardware and allows users to communicate with the
computer. It performs the basic operations of a computer.
The operating system is run on the hardware which is run on the firmware. NOTE:
firmware will be explained later on.
THE OS HAS SEVERAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Human User Interface;
The operating system provides an interface so that the user can interact with the
computer
There are two types of these interfaces:
i. Command Line Interface (CLI)
This type of interface allows direct communication with the computer by making
use of command prompts. It also takes up less memory space.
However, the user needs to learn a set of commands to carry out basic operations
which can be less user friendly.
Ii. Graphical User interface (GUI)
