1. **Centroids**: - The centroid is the geometric center of a plane figure or object. It is the point where the shape's area or volume can be considered to be concentrated for calculations. - For regular shapes (e.g., triangles, rectangles, circles), the centroid lies at a well-defined position, typically at the intersection of symmetry axes. - **Applications**: - Structural analysis: Determining the center of mass distribution in beams or columns. - Mechanical design: Locating the center for balanced designs in gears and machinery. #### 2. **Center of Gravity (CG)**: - The center of gravity is the point in a body or system where the entire weight is considered to act, regardless of its orientation. - In uniform gravitational fields, the center of gravity coincides with the centroid. - For irregular shapes or varying density, the CG is determined by balancing the moments of weight distribution. - **Applications**: - Stability analysis: Ensuring vehicles, buildings, and structures remain stable. - Robotics and design: Balancing parts to avoid tipping or imbalance. #### 3. **Friction**: - Friction is the resistive force that opposes the relative motion or the tendency of such motion between two surfaces in contact. - Types of Friction: - **Static Friction**: Prevents motion between surfaces until a certain threshold force is applied. - **Kinetic Friction**: Acts during motion, usually less than static friction. - **Rolling Friction**: Resistance when an object rolls over a surface. - **Factors Affecting Friction**: - Surface roughness. - Nature of the materials in contact. - Normal force acting between the surfaces. - **Applications**: - Braking systems: Using friction to stop or slow motion. - Mechanical systems: Controlling motion through friction (e.g., belts and pulleys). - Everyday life: Walking, writing, and gripping objects. #### Importance: - **Centroids and CG**: Crucial in engineering for designing stable and efficient structures and systems. - **Friction**: Essential for controlling motion, ensuring stability, and enabling functionality in both natural and artificial systems. Understanding these concepts is fundamental in physics and engineering, enabling the analysis and design of stable, efficient, and functional systems and structures.

Centre of Gravity and Centroid
• Definitions
• The centroid is the geometric centre of a
body, while the centre of gravity is the
point where the total weight of the body
acts.

,• The center of gravity of a
body is fixed with respect to
the body, but the coordinates
depend on the choice of
coordinate system. For
example, in Figure 1 the
center of gravity of the block
is at its geometric center
meaning that x¯ and y¯ are
positive, but if the block is
moved to the left of Figure 1
the x axis, or the coordinate
system is translated to the
right of the block, x¯ would
then become negative

, • Assume that the two halves of the pencil have
known weights acting at points 1 and 2.

To be equivalent, the total weight must equal the total weight of the parts. W = W1
+W2 .
Common sense also tells us that W will act somewhere between W1 and W2.
