It is a summary from the chapter services -IRD. It contains photos for the main cases + it includes all the theory from the lesson (briefly summarized in a kind of table). The table is structured with a title and next to it all the information we need to know about that specific chapter. It is a summary in English.

H12 – SERVICES – comfort, water, energy
Introduction The layer services  space – structure – skin – services – stuff
(Brand)
1) CASE
! C1 Centre Pompidou, Piano & Rogers: most iconic example
CONFLICT: design for change <-> history classified  a process to
solve: define problem – research – brainstorm on possible solutions –
select solution – build a prototype – test – evaluate – redesign
OBSERVATIONS: amiant1, E losses, fire safety laws changed,
installations need to be exchanged, elevators, piping…
SOLLUTION: with AIA engineers = 262mil

Actual thinking mode: problem – solving
- Disadvantage: working on single parts, going
into detail, specialised professions, complex
issues: smaller
- Advantage: getting more knowledge on the
behaviour of 1 thing
2 thinking modes:
1. Analytical: knowledge = how things work
2. System thinking: understanding = why
things work the way they do
System thinker = who recognizes that a sum is greater than its
parts, that all the pieces of an organization connect, interact & play
a part in outcomes = comprised of elements: parts, entities,
persons, components  interconnected
! understand a systems behaviour as a WHOLE

System thinking at Centre Pompidou  movement for
tomorrow
- Neologism (1977): reinventing the
institution’s original utopia while responding
of the cultural, societal & environmental
challenges of the coming years
 Multi disciplinarity + hospitality +
1) Living systems experimental factor for young people + eco
responsibility
SOLLUTION: with architects Kusunoki and Moreau = 186mil

Living systems – living network = the basic pattern of life:
ecosystem = network of organisms = network of cells…
Living systems = constantly renewing = regenerating + reflects the
laws of nature: system adapts by reorganizing its relationships &
redistributing resources to maintain balance  ecosystems adjust
when species population shift
2) Regenerative - Living system maps – climate change
building

, services

How can we design regenerative building services?
RD principles: holistic framework of 7 principles: nestedness –
wholeness – essence – potential – developmental – reciprocity –
nodal2

Nestedness: ecosystems  many smaller systems nested within
them, those systems nested within larger systems
CONSEQUENCE: health of 1 system affect health of a larger system –
interdependence
 Buildings are designed in harmony with their
local & regional context, taking into larger
ecosystems & communities
Crossing red lines:
1. Boundary around site: unlikely that sufficient
E can be generated on site to offset E
demand of the building  some contribution
beyond site
2. Landlord / tenant divide: the occupants drive
the E demand  while landlord owns &
operates the central plant
3. Line construction – operation: operational
performance matches ambitious targets of
the design stage  too often: design intent is
not being delivered in the operational
performance
Strategy = looking for potential  identify a regenerative role
1. Focus on essential relationships (mutual
benefit + support pattern)
2. Keep context present (needs & requirements
of the project place)
3. Value restraints (creative challenge to
overcome)
4. Map emerging patterns of a relationship

A holistic approach: ‘living building challenge’: 4 typologies
1. New building
2. Existing building
3. Interior
4. Landscape & infrastructure
Petals: place – water – energy – health & happiness – materials –
