ASPHALT PAVEMENT TEST 2025
Asphaltic concrete ANSWER A composite material that is prepared in a hot-
mix plant and used for construction of highway, parking lot, or airfield
pavements capable of supporting high traffic volumes and axle loads.
Automatic screed controls - ANSWER A system that overrides the self-leveling
action of the asphalt paver screed and enables paving to a pre-determined grade
and slope, using either a rigid or a mobile type reference.
Baghouse - ANSWER Filter system at an asphalt plant to capture fine dust
particles.
Binder - ANSWER The asphalt cement material in a paving mix used to bind
the aggregate particles together, to prevent the entrance of moisture, and to act
as a cushioning agent.
Binder course - ANSWER A layer of asphalt mix placed between the base and
the surface courses in the pavement structure.
Breakdown - ANSWER The initial compaction of the asphalt mix that occurs
directly behind the paver and is designed to achieve maximum density in the
shortest period of time.
Cross-slope - ANSWER The transverse slope of a road way or other surface.
Friction course - ANSWER The top surface layer of an asphalt pavement,
usually less than 1 in. thick, to improve skid resistance and smoothness.
