client - Answer-a word used in the regulations and in some work settings that means the
person in your care

dignity - Answer-the client's sense that his or her rights, wants, and needs are respected

discrimination - Answer-treating someone differently or unfavorably because of their
age, race, religion, sex, sexual preference, national origin, or disability

dressing - Answer-assistance with dressing and undressing. dressing includes
supervising and guiding the client when dressing and undressing, assisting with difficult
tasks such as tying shoes and buttoning, and completely dressing or undressing client
when he/she is unable to participate in dressing or undressing self

eating - Answer-assistance with eating. eating includes supervising the client when
he/she is able to do it himself/herself, assisting with difficult tasks such as cutting food
or buttering bread, and feeding him/her when he/she is unable to feed himself/herself

enema - Answer-injection of fluid into the rectum for the purposes of causing a bowel
movement. or fluid put into the anus up to the lower colon. you may be asked to help if
shown by a nurse and is a skill allowed to do

essential shopping - Answer-assistance with shopping to meet the client's health care or
nutritional needs. essential shopping is limited to brief, occasional trips in the local area
to shop for food, medical necessities, and household items required specifically for the
health and maintenance of the client. essential shopping includes assisting when the
client can participate in shopping and doing the shopping when the client is unable to
participate

footboard - Answer-a small board placed upright at the foot of a bed to hold bed linens
off of feet or to allow feet to rest in a flexed (toes pointed up) position

grooming - Answer-simple care needs such as shaving, combing hair, teeth brushing,
and even make-up and perfume. grooming refers to the finishing touches that each
person needs to look their best

housework - Answer-means performing or helping the client perform those periodic
tasks required to maintain the client in a safe and healthy environment. activities
performed include such things as cleaning the kitchen and bathroom, sweeping,
vacuuming, mopping, cleaning the oven, and defrosting the freezer, shoveling snow.
washing inside windows and walls is allowed but is limited to twice a year. assistance

, with housework is limited to those areas of the house which are actually used by the
client. this task is not a maid service and does not include yard care

laundry - Answer-washing, drying, ironing, and mending clothes and linens used by the
client or helping the client perform these tasks

lifting - Answer-refers to the assistance a client may need to move from one place to
another or one position to another. proper lifting of a client is essential to ensure the
safety of both your client and yourself

meal preparation - Answer-assistance with preparing meals. meal preparation includes
planning meals including special diets, assisting Clients who are able to participate in
meal preparation, preparing for Clients unable to participate, and cleaning up after
meals. this task may not be authorized to just plan meals or clean up after meals. the
client must need assistance with actual meal preaparation

mobility equipment - Answer-any device or piece of equipment that can help a person
with movement. Typically it includes wheelchairs, walkers, gait belts (used around the
client's waist to allow the caregiver to have a secure hold), sliding boards and other
equipment. whenever you begin work with a new client you will want to learn about the
specific mobility equipment thatperson uses, and receive training on the proper use of
that equipment.

monitoring - Answer-observation and reporting to detect any changes in a client's
condition

neglect - Answer-allowing a client to be in physical discomfort or injured, or not
providing care that a client needs. neglect of a person used to be considered a lesser
offense than abuse, however, in most states it is now considered equally as bad as
client abuse and is punishable by law

orthotic device - Answer-a medical device use to correct impairments in the client's
skeletal or muscular system

ostomy bag - Answer-a bag that connects to the colon or small intestine through a hole
in the abdomen or allow for the removal of waste products. your job is to monitor the
ostomy site, empty the ostomy bag if the person is not able to do so and make sure the
person is comfortable and clean

peri care - Answer-care of the perineal area, between a person's legs, to prevent
infection and skin irritation

permitted duties - Answer-the things you are allowed to do as a caregiver. be sure you
know what is allowed and what is NOT allowed by law in your state
