• Amino acids are organic acids containing
an amine group and carboxylic group,
they are the building units of proteins.
• The amino group is
attached to the
α- carbon which is
next to the carboxyl
group; hence the
name α-amino acid

• More than 300 amino acids are occur in
nature.
• Only 20 of them are proteinogenic amino
acids and encoded directly by triplet codons in
the genetic code (DNA) and are known as
"standard" amino acids.
