Conflict & Tension: The Inter War Years

Part One: The peacemakers
The Treaty of Versailles and Peace-making after WW1
The peace talks took place in Paris and Germany wasn’t invited to the discussion.
These talks were to replace the temporary peace settlement and these talks took
place in January 1919 and were known as the Paris Peace Conference. Here are the
Terms of the Treaty.
 The Rhineland – The Rhineland was a part of Germany and stayed a part of
Germany however was demilitarised. This means that no German troops were
allowed in there. This angered Germany as the Rhineland was in a
militaristically strategic place to defend from France.

 Alsace-Lorraine – Germany had a land in west Germany called Alsace-
Lorraine. They lost this land in the armistice but in the Treaty of Versailles, this
was made permanent. It was a large piece of valuable land.

 Poland – Germany had to give up all its land that had previously belonged to
Poland, and they re-introduced Poland as an independent country.

 Army – Germany’s Army had been reduced to only 100,000 men which was tiny
compared to other nations. This made it so there were less jobs in Germany
eventually causing their economy to collapse. Germany also weren’t allowed to
have any navy or an air force. They also weren’t allowed to have U-boats and
the Army was greatly restricted.

 Money - Germany owed the allies and other powers a total of £6.6 billion
pounds which was an incredibly high amount for that time and it meant that the
German economy.

 Blame – The Germans had to take blame for the War starting and had to accept
responsibility the war. This lowered the German morale as they believed that it
wasn’t the peoples fault and that it was the Kaisers and the Governments fault.

 Land - Overall Germany lost 13% of its land which meant that the German
people felt weak and less strong and morale was low as Germany wanted to feel
like a powerful Nation. Some examples of land it lost were: Danzig, The Sudeten
Land; Czechoslovakia received land from Germany also; The Rhineland was de-
militarised; Poland had received parts of West Prussia

Aims of The Big three and their Nations
English people and French people – The English and French were angry at the
Germans and wanted them to be punished.
American people – The U.S believed in isolationism and didn’t want to be a part of
European politics. Therefore, the U.S didn’t enter the League of Nations which was
formed by Woodrow Wilson.
