Influence:
“When I was a teenager, I really wanted to be a singer. My mother did not think this was a great
plan for me. She would tell me stories about struggling singers who went through life struggling
financially. She would then tell me other stories about people in different jobs that were
successful and happy. What was my mother trying to do? What kind of power was trying to use
on me?”
Class answers using ‘influence’ or the word ‘affect’.
“Very good. My mother was trying to influence my decision by making it look bad. Influence is a
3-syllable noun with the stress on the first syllable: In-flu-ence. Try it for yourself”
Give the students time to say it out loud for themselves.
“Influence’ is when a person tries to have power over what you are doing or the choice you are
making. It can also be a thing or situation that influences your behaviour. For example, if my
mother had sent me for singing lessons and supported my choice, her influence would have been
good but she didn’t support it and made singing look bad and therefore she had a bad influence.
Influences can be good or bad. If you had a friend encouraging you to learn for your exams, that
would be a good influence on you, where as if a friend encouraged you not to study and to cheat
on the test instead, they would be a bad influence on you. if someone told you to lie for them,
would they be influencing your behaviour in a good way or a bad way? And if someone
encouraged you to follow your dreams, would this be a good or a bad influence?”
