ost people are probably asking the question,
M
"Was the Stamp Act Justified?"
What if I told you that it was Justified?
Background
he British felt they were well Justified in charging this tax because the colonies were
T
receiving the benefit of the British troops and needed to help pay for the expense. Do
you think the Stamp Act was justified? "Was the Stamp Act Justified?" I believe that
the Stamp Act was Justified.
Colonist Representation
he Stamp Act was the first direct tax imposed by the British Parliament upon the
T
American colonies in 1765. Colonists were supposed to pay a tax for every piece of
printed paper they used. The Stamp Act was justified to help with the costs of keeping
a British military presence, but this tax was considered unfair, as colonists did not have
any representation in Parliament to voice their concerns or give consent. This caused
the colonists to lead protests and boycotts against the Stamp Act.
Appropriateness
ar was expensive, "The Navy used to cost about £7 or 8 thousand, now it costs
W
about £1,400,000".
Affordabili ty
It was not affordable, "Disbursed about 500,000 pounds, and the reimbursements,
in the whole, did not exceed 60,000 pounds."
That is why I believe that the Stamp Act was Justified.
