Introduction
 Objective
o To confirm that the condition for static translation equilibrium is that the
vectors sum of force is zero.
o To experimentally test the vector nature of force.
o To practice manipulating the vector and attain understanding of vectors.
o To find unknown tension and direction in a system of strings connected to
a central ring.
 Theoretical Background
o Stated by the Newton’s law of motion, if a particle receives a net force of
zero, will either stay still, or move in a constant speed in a straight line.
o Physical quantities are generally classified as scalar or vectors.
o Vector is a quantity that has both magnitude and direction, force is a good
example of a vector.

, o There are 2 methods for the addition of force vectors. The methods are
called Graphical Method --- Triangle (Head to Tail) Method and Analytical
Method --- Component Method.
o Graphical Method --- Triangle (Head to Tail) Method: Vectors are
represented graphically by arrows. The length of an arrow is
corresponding to the magnitude of the vector.
o Analytical Method --- Component Method: Vectors can be broken down
into two parts x and y. The sum of theses vectors can be obtained by
adding x and y component of the vector. The magnitude of the vector is
shows as R= (Rx2 +Ry2)1/2, where Rx=Ax+Bx+Cx, and Ry=Ay+By+Cy.


Experimental Procedure
 Equipment List: Force Table, Centering pin on the table with 3 pulley strings,
weight hangers (50g), 3 ring attached with the 3 knotted strings, and standard set
of weight.




 The outer rim of the table is graduated in degrees. The central ring is attached
with three knotted strings is placed around the centering pin of the force table.
 Weights are added on the hangers that are hung at the ends of the knot of each
string that run over the pulley at different location around the table.
 Each string will exert a force on the ring that is proportional to the mass hung on
it and in a direction along the line of the string.
 The magnitude (which is the mass times the acceleration due to gravity) of a
force (vector) is varied by adding or removing slotted weight, and the direction is
varied by moving the pulley.
