I will observe the following basic rules at all time while in biology lab:
1. During lab sessions, place coats, books, etc. in the specified location and not on the bench
top.
2. Wipe down lab bench with disinfectant solution at the end of lab.
3. Place contaminated instruments and materials in the correct receptacle as designated by
the instructor.
4. Wash hands before leaving the laboratory.
5. Do not eat, smoke, handle contact lenses, or apply cosmetics in the laboratory. Restrain
long hair, loose clothing, and dangling jewelry.
6. Do not put trash or biological material into the sink.
7. Use test-tube racks when moving tubes around the lab. This serves dual purposes: to
prevent accidents and to avoid contamination of yourself and the environment.
8. Never remove lab materials from the laboratory. Doing so is totally prohibited!!
9. Be careful with microscopic slides and glassware, and immediately contact the instructor if
there is a chemical spill or breakage of glass. Dispose of chemicals as determined by
instructor. Broken glass should be put into broken glass container.
10. Report accidental cuts or burns to the instructor immediately.
11. Never mouth pipette anything in lab!
12. Do not lick labels. Use a sharpie to mark your tubes, plates, etc.
13. Speak quietly and avoid unnecessary movement around the lab to prevent distractions that
may cause accidents.
14. Immediately wash hands if you come in direct contact with bacterial cultures, lab solutions or
bodily fluids.
15. Do not leave heat sources unattended.
16. Be aware of location of eyewash, safety shower, and fire extinguisher.
