Answer:
Horse riding equipment is known as tack and consists of a bridle that controls the horse’s head and a
saddle on which the rider sits. The girth strap goes around the horse and holds the latter in place
and the rider’s feet are positioned in the stirrups (5 marks)

Tack is the equipment used when riding a horse. Basic tack consists of a saddle and bridle. The
saddle, of course, is the seat for a rider. It is generally made of leather and has various accessories.
The girth strap goes around the horse just behind the front legs to hold the saddle in place. The
stirrups are attached to the saddle with stirrup leathers and they support the rider’s feet.
A saddle is constructed around a frame or “tree”, which is made of wood or synthetic material. It
must fit the horse correctly to distribute the rider’s weight evenly. It is important that tack fits
correctly so that it does not chafe and has no rough edges which can cause friction sores. There
should be a saddle cloth or numnah under the saddle to minimise rubbing.

a) Describe some methods you could employ to load a difficult horse in a horse-box. (6
marks)
Answer:
Firstly, you could try to calmly lead it up the ramp, moving alongside it and without pulling. You can
tempt it with a treat if it is reluctant, or attempt to blindfold the horse. If that doesn’t work, two
people can link hands behind the horse’s rear or use two ropes crossed behind the horse’s rear, or
use lunging reins attached to either side of the horsebox behind the horse to push it forward. If all
else fails, the horse can be given a tranquiliser for the sake of your safety as well as that of the horse.

Lead the horse calmly up the ramp, moving alongside it. Never try to pull the horse up the ramp, as
this will just increase its anxiety.
You can try to tempt it with a treat if it is reluctant, or attempt to load it blindfolded (the horse, not
you!).
