Discussion Thread: Valid and Ethical Conduct of Research
According to Check & Schutt (2012), The American Educational Research Association
(AERA) utilizes ethical guidelines for educational research to maintain ethics and validity, which
are of great significance, given that they ensure that researchers provide truthful and original
information, which is free of errors. The moral principles concerning ethics guide researchers to
report or conduct research without deceiving or harming the study's participants or society
members, whether unknowingly or knowingly (Check & Schutt, 2012). Similarly, validity in
research plays the significant role of ensuring that the collection of data or surveys does not
involve malpractice, including the fabrication of data to make the study's results valid (Waheed
et al., 2020).
Check & Schutt (2012) explains that ethics in research can be in various ways, all of
which are to be fulfilled by the researcher. Firstly, the researchers should ensure that the subjects
of the research are not harmed. Secondly, participation should be voluntary. Additionally,
researchers should ask for consent from participants. Before beginning the research, the
researchers should provide full disclosure of their identity. Another way to accomplish ethics in
research is by maintaining the confidentiality or anonymity of the participants. Lastly,
researchers should assess whether the benefits outweigh the research's foreseeable perils (Check
& Schutt, 2012). Coleman (2022) asserts that researchers can accomplish validity during
research by checking responses. With this method, the researchers can confirm the accuracy of
participant responses through paraphrasing, echoing, and clarifying comments that depict
ambiguity (Coleman, 2022). As a result, researchers maintain validity during data collection
from participants. According to Coleman (2022), multiple coding can also be used to accomplish
validity in qualitative research, where researchers employ consistent checks, peer reviews, and
inter-coder reliability. These strategies facilitate the accomplishment of ethics and validity during
research by ensuring that researchers adopt appropriate and ethical practices through conducting
forthright and robust research.
From a biblical worldview, ethics and validity are important aspects of life. As stated in
the Bible, "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light
for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter" (New International Bible, 1978/2011,
Isaiah 5:20). Based on this scripture, non-ethical behavior is offensive and futile to God. This
scripture discourages calling good evil, therefore asserting that individuals should be truthful
with their intentions or actions. Therefore, the bible depicts the importance of ethics by
highlighting that the right beliefs are related to pursuing the right actions. From this perspective,
researchers must ensure an ethical approach while conducting their research. In other words, the
scripture highlights the relevance of ethics and validity.
