affiliates. ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice,
promoting the economic and general welfare of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and
realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues
affecting nurses and the public. In 1965, the ANA proposed a bachelor's degree in nursing within 10

whose membership comprises the boards of nursing in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five
United States territories--American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin
Islands. The purpose of NCSBN is to provide an organization through which boards of nursing act and
counsel together on matters of common interest and concern affecting the public health, safety and
welfare, including the development of licensing examinations in nursing. NCSBN's programs and services
include developing the NCLEX-RN® and NCLEX-PN® examinations, performing policy analysis and
promoting uniformity in relationship to the regulation of nursing practice, disseminating data related to
the licensure of nurses, conducting research pertinent to NCSBN's purpose, and serving as a forum for
information exchange for members.

associate degree nursing education, strengthening the professional role of the associate degree nurse,

"nursing science". The body of knowledge forms the theoretical basis for the practice of nursing. The
knowledge is based on research carried out by nurses.

Nursing has a body of knowledge that is unique to nursing and the body of knowledge continues to
