Class 7, Homework 7 (Chapter 9)
1. The scientific method: The systematic collection of information that will be analyzed to
generate insight into a phenomena.
2. Research samples bias: Bias: all samples of human subjects are biased due to those who
are willing to participate.
3. Independent variable (IV) vs. Dependent variable (DV): Independent variable is that
which the researcher manipulates or measures to “predict” something else (DV).
Dependent variable (DV), that which the researcher is looking to change, have an impact
on or which is predicted by the (IV).
4. Archival research data: Examination of data collected for other purposes.
5. Cross Section Research conclusions: Data are collected at one time only.
"Cause and effect" can only be inferred (assumed, not proven)
6. Longitudinal research: Data is collected at several points over time. Causal claims can be
made if variables measured at Time 1 (e.g., gender, mental health) significantly predict
variables measured at Time 2 (e.g., exercising or condom use or alcohol).
7. Qualitative questions: Any information that can be captured that is not numerical in
nature. The data can be recorded in a wide variety of ways including. Stenography, audio
