Administering ear drops to Adult and Child: - ANS-1. Follow the "6 Rights" of med admin
2. Read order carefully for ear receiving medication
3. Position the patient in LATERAL SUPINE position with the AFFECTED ear UPPERMOST
4. Draw medication into medication dropper by depressing the bulb and letting it go
5. Draw pinna up and back
6. For children < 3 years old draw pinna down and back
7. Insert tip of medication dropper into the external ear canal and depress the bulb to dispense
the med, withdram the dropper
8. Place a cotton in the external meatus to prevent the medication from scaping
9. Have the patient remain in lateral position for 5-10 minutes
Administering medication/Safety: - ANS-Must verify medication order and make sure is
complete prior to administration by following the 6 rights

3. Make sure the patient does not bear full wait on AFFECTED side
4. Walk beside the patient on AFFECTED side
5. Ensure handgrip is at hip level, patient's elbow bent 15-30 degrees
6. Ensure the cane's tip is 6-10 inches to the side and 6 inches in front of the foot
7. Remind the patient to look straight ahead while ambulating

rephrase message in different words limit to one subject and one verb)
7. Give patient time to respond to questions
8. Ask for oral/written feedback to make sure you're understood
9. Avoid using intercom system because it may distort sound

Contracture - ANS-Adaptive shortening and stiffness of a muscle
Most common are foot drop knee, hip flexion, wrist drop, fingers and arms
Crutches/Proper Use - ANS-1. Ensure proper length and have rubber suction
2. Have client look straight ahead, place the crutches slightly ahead of feet and to the outside of
each foot
3. Client's must use hands, NOT AXILLAE to support their weight
4. Have the patient keep straight and bend at hips
5. Remind the patient that crutches and leg should move together
6. Encourage patient to achieve a smooth rhythm
Detached retina/Findings: - ANS--Painless

Early symptoms: dark, irregular vitreous floaters (flashes of light) blurred vision

Note: As it progresses the patient often notices a curtain drop, veil or grayness in the vision field
