In this particular patient case, there were a few red flags that stood out to me during the
process of obtaining the patient history and physical examination. The first red flag was the
patient’s extensive history of similar headaches over the years. The second red flag was that she
had associated symptoms of photophobia, nausea , and phonophobia, which was most time
relieved with a dark, quiet room. The third red flag was the patient past medical history of a
“scary” episode last summer presented with loss of vision in certain directions and visual
flashes lasting for 20 minutes. Fourth red flag is her current severe throbbing headache last
over 30 hours with no relieve from acetaminophen. Migraine is a headache disorder
characterized by episodes of generally unilateral moderate-to-severe headache and frequently
associated with nausea, photophobia, and phonophobia (Pescador et al., 2022). Based on my
pertinent key findings, “the worst-case scenario” the patient can be diagnosed with is brain
tumor or subarachnoid hemorrhage (Bickley, 2020). The lessons that I learned from this case,
is to obtain a more thorough patient history on my patient. Additionally, do this by know all
the important questions to ask my patients. Furthermore, during the physical examination,
know exactly which test should be done to help me get to the correct diagnosis.
