Outbreak of SARS in Guangdong, thought to be pneumonia
- Jan. 2003: super-spreader infects 30 nurses and doctors
- Feb. 2003: virus spread to Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Canada (China finally identifies
305 cases)
- March. 2003: Spreads to Singapore, Taiwan, air travelers are now isolated
- Continues to spread across globe by May
Suspected Cases as of May 6, 2003: 320 from U.S.
China had 349 dead: 6.6% mortality rate
U.S: 27 cases definitively confirmed: 0 deaths
Came through horseshoe bats and passed through Asian palm civets before infecting humans
Crown virus: spike proteins make it look crown-like
- novel (not before known) human CoV viruses
- NL63: been around since 1981
2016: MERS (Middle eastern respiratory syndrome)
- host were camels, originally also came from bats
1700 cases and about 680 deaths: 39.1% mortality
- still have some sporadic cases
SARS however, did go away: haven’’t seen it until this year, a different one

Wuhan: some reports say Covid strain was included
