Adults: Initially, 75 mg (immediate-release) P.O. daily in two or three divided doses
with food. Increase as tolerated and needed by 75 mg daily every 4 days. usual
maximum is 225 mg daily

PATIENT EDUCATION WHILE TAKING THIS MEDICATION
Warn patient to avoid hazardous activities that require alertness and good
coordination until effects of drug are known.
•Tell patient to avoid alcohol and to consult prescriber before taking other
prescription or OTC drugs or supplements.
•Teach patient to recognize and immediately report signs and symptoms of
serotonin toxicity (fever, mental status changes, muscle twitching, excessive
sweating, shivering or shaking, diarrhea, loss of coordination).
• Advise female patient of childbearing potential to contact prescriber if she
becomes pregnant or intends to become pregnant during therapy or if she’s
breastfeeding.
•Tell patient to take each dose with food and a full glass of water.
•Tell patient not to crush, chew, or place extended-release capsules or tablets in
water. If patient can’t swallow capsule whole, advise patient to carefully open
capsule and sprinkle contents on a spoonful of applesauce, mix and take
immediately without chewing pellets, then follow with a full glass of water.
