MFP1501 Assignment 4 Semester 2 2024 | Due 16 October 2024. All questions answered. Question 1 Teaching algebra concepts in the early grades requires using patterns to make connections. 1.1 Mention four ways you will use to teach Grade 3 learners algebra using patterns. (4) 1.2 Study the pattern below and answer the following questions: 1.2.1 Identify the repeating patterns (3) 1.2.2 How many elements does the repeating unit contain (3) (10) Question 2 Growing patterns are patterns in which one or more elements of the sequence increase. Growing patterns can also be both numeric and non-numeric. 2.1 Design a growing pattern which is either a numeric or non-numeric (6) 2.2 Illustrate how your pattern starts and grows (4) 2.3 Construct a general statement for the pattern you designed in 2.1. (5) 2.4 Six Grade 2 learners sit around one table; the teacher joins the two tables, and eight sit on the two tables. Calculate how many learners would sit at the following tables: 2.4.1 Five tables (5) 2.4.2 Twenty-five tables (5) 2.4.3 Two hundred tables (5) N.B Show the formula and all the steps of your calculations. (30) Question 3 3.1 Draw four different quadrilaterals (if you are unable to draw due to disability or medical reasons, find pictures) (8) 3.2 Name and describe each in detail (12) (20) Question 4 4.1 Differentiate between regular polygon and irregular polygon (2) 4.2 Design six irregular and regular polygons (if you are unable to design due to disability or medical reasons, find pictures and paste them on your answer sheet) (18) 4.3 Discuss three ways a shape can change or transform into a congruent shape. Make sure you motivate your discussion with drawings or pictures. Do not use those in the study guide. (15) 4.4 Calculate the area of a cylinder with a diameter of 12cm and height of 30cm. (5) (40) Total marks 100

 Question 1

1.1. Mention four ways you will use to teach Grade 3 learners algebra using patterns.

 Develop algebraic expressions through numeric patterns: Use growing patterns, like 3, 6, 9,
12..., to help learners recognize the rule (e.g., adding 3) and express it as an algebraic
expression (e.g., 3n, where 'n' represents the position of the number in the sequence).

 Introduce variables through repeating patterns: Present repeating patterns, like
AABCAABC..., and guide learners to understand that the position in the pattern can be
represented by a variable, helping them predict unknown elements in the sequence.

 Relate patterns to real-life contexts: Use familiar scenarios, such as "If each student gets 2
pencils, how many pencils are needed for 10 students?" Extend this to "How many pencils for
'n' students?" to illustrate practical uses of algebraic expressions.

 Use visual representations: Incorporate drawings, manipulatives, or diagrams to make
patterns concrete, like using blocks to represent a growing pattern (e.g., 2, 4, 6, 8...). This helps
students visually grasp the concept of patterns and algebraic relationships.

1.2. Study the pattern below and answer the following questions:

1.2.1. Identify the repeating patterns.

In the sequence provided, the shapes follow a repeating cycle of square, triangle, circle. This pattern
repeats after every three shapes.
 First group: Square, Triangle, Circle (positions 1, 2, 3)
 Second group: Square, Triangle, Circle (positions 4, 5, 6)

1.2.2. How many elements does the repeating unit contain.

The repeating unit contains three elements: a square, a triangle, and a circle.
