5. This is an open-book examination. You may consult your prescribed study
material during the examination. However, you may not simply copy and paste

Critically discuss the role of the Independent Electoral Commission in supporting and
strengthening constitutional democracy in South Africa. (20)
Question 2
The different forms of democracy that are common in most democratic constitutional
states are: direct democracy, representative democracy, participatory democracy,
constitutional democracy, and multi-party democracy. Briefly discuss these forms of
democracy and their various features. (20)
Question 3
While marking 30 years of democracy, on 29 May 2024, South Africa will be holding
its seventh general (national and provincial) election since the end of the Apartheid
era in 1994. In your own words, and with reference to provisions of the Constitution,
case law, and examples, succinctly discuss the importance of participation in
democratic electoral processes. (20)

Concisely explain, why ‘civic and voter education’ is importance for promoting massive
participation in the democratic electoral processes. (20)
