BTEC Level 3 Phoebe Hull Unit 1
P4: Explain how their style of organisation helps Helen & Douglas House and
Urban Outfitters to fulfil their purpose
Helen & Douglas House
Helen and douglas house has a flat structure. They aim to raise funds to support
two hospices, which help young adults and children with terminal illnesses and
support their families. They have less expensive managers which means the
costs are less which helps to ensure that donated money goes to the Hospice
itself and not to the costs of expensive managers, this is all due to them having a
flat structure. This means that the line of communication is short which means
that decisions are able to be formed quickly which allows them to be easily
explained to the members of staff. The managers have a wide are of control and
this works well because the other members of staff who are volunteers have a
soul purpose to care for the hospice and the patients and they don’t want to have
close management, if they did it wouldn’t work for this business.
They employ specialist staff within certain areas, the structure has different
functional areas, these are: finance, marketing, Human Resources and medical.
This allows their work to act more effectively, which helps them to save time and
money, which decreases their overall costs and in turn allows more donations to
be reimbursed into the Hospice itself.
Urban Outfitters
Urban outfitters are a huge organisation, which have a flat structure. They aim to
build a strong emotional bond with their customers through their lifestyle
merchandise. Their customers inspire their work and they aim to build lifestyle
environments that entice their customers emotionally and offer them
appropriate fashion products as well as making a profit. Their structure of their
business allows the managers of the business to have more control over it and
they have fewer levels of management, which ensures that their staff perform
efficiently and effectively ensuring that they fulfil their aim as a business.
Urban outfitters have different functional areas for example finance, HR and
marketing, they employ specialist employees for these particular areas. This
allows them to save time and money, which increases their profit and allows
them to achieve their aims more effectively by creating the best experience
possible for the customers. The marketing team is comprised of specialised
individuals who are aware of exactly how to market their products and promote
their business in order to fulfil UOs purpose. The Human resources employees
are specialised in recruitment of the right staff for the business, which means
they will recruit the appropriate new staff that will fulfil the aim of the business
appropriately.
