Learning Objective (6.11) - Answer✔️✔️-Explain how different reform movements
responded to the rise of industrial capitalism in the Gilded Age
Reform in the Gilded Age (CONTEXT) - Answer✔️✔️-Early reform efforts like the farmers
trying to regulate rail roads and workers who were pushing for reform failed during the
Gilded Age. However, the ideas and movements gained strength with the introduction of
the educated middle class who had tome to create and join organizations to bring
change.
Socialism in the Gilded Age - Answer✔️✔️-Henry George published a book in 1789 that
condemned laissez-faire economics and called inequalities in wealth caused by
industrialization. He said that the way to end poverty was to end all taxes and have a
single tax on land. Edward Bellamy also published a book with the same sentiments as
well. He envisioned that by 2000 the world would be free of poverty, greed, and crime.
Both were criticized for being utopians, both inspired followers who followed other
reform movements, both encouraged a shift from the American economy from laissez-
faire to regulation, and both were called soclialists.
Religion during the Gilded Age - Answer✔️✔️-Roman Catholicism grew in the US due to
the influx of immigrants from Italy, Ireland, and eastern Europe. Leaders like Cardinal
