SAQ 1 Question:
Try to think of a rationale for each of the following questions:
a) Would a large antacid tablet have a faster or slower effect
on neutralising stomach acid than two smaller tablets?
b) Can pure aspirin be produced in a college laboratory?
Your answer:
a) Larger tablets may have a greater effect on neutralising
stomach acid, but smaller tablets may have a quicker
effect on neutralising stomach acid so it would need to
be discovered which size tablet is effective for both
speed and effectiveness. If a larger one is more
effective, the producers could sell fewer tablets.
b) All available technology, equipment, and techniques
used in the college laboratory could be used to see if
there are any college methods that could produce pure
aspirin by comparing it to standard methods of
obtaining pure aspirin. Teachers could use this
information to test out different production processes
of aspirin or show how students could assess the
purity of aspirin so that tablets could be analysed.

Decide on a research title for the following investigations:
a) What is the best catalyst to use to speed up the
decomposition of hydrogen peroxide?
b) Does the size of antacid tablets affect the speed of
neutralisation of stomach acid?
