1. What constitutes personal protective equipment? When should personal protective equipment be worn? Why is personal protective equipment important? Personal protective equipment Includes: safety goggles, face protection, gloves, aprons, lab coats and shoe covers. PPE should be worn whenever an experiment is being conducted and whenever an airborne pathogen or contaminant can be transferred to you. It is important to use PPE in order to protect yourself from harsh chemicals and viruses. PPE is also helpful in order to prevent the spread of microbes and bacteria during an experiment. Also PPE is helpful to ensure accuracy during the experiment conduction. 2. Why are there increasing levels of biological containment procedures? What level of biological containment will be necessary to complete the experiments in this manual? There are increasing levels of biological containment during procedures due to the fact that pathogens are always evolving and are highly transmittable. There is a level of biological containment necessary for the experiments in this manual. The containment will involve you to wear proper PPE during each experiment. Once each experiment is complete, you must dispose of the microbes and chemicals properly using bleach and Parafilm. 3. What document should you refer to if you have questions regarding the safety or disposal of a chemical? Where can this document be located? It is best to refer to the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for any questions regarding safety and proper disposal. The MSDS is located online via the eScience Lab website.
