, EMA1501 ASSIGNMENT 5
QUESTION 2: DEVELOPING MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS THROUGH PLAY
Read the sentence below and answer the questions that follow.
Young children learn maths informally through a wide variety of play experiences.
2.1 Identify the different types of play illustrated in the two pictures below.
Picture 1
This shows children playing on a jungle gym, which involves physical and locomotor play. This
type of play includes activities that require movement, coordination, and the use of large muscle
groups.
Picture 2
This depicts a child pretending to be a doctor, which is an example of fantasy play. Fantasy play
involves children using their imagination to role-play scenarios they have observed in real life.
2.2 Explain how each type of play contributes to the development of
mathematics concepts in children.
Physical and locomotor play
Through physical play, children learn about measurement, distance, and counting.
For example, while moving across the jungle gym, they might count steps, jumps,
or distances. They also develop spatial awareness as they navigate through the
play structure, understanding concepts such as "up," "down," "across," and "under."
This type of play also introduces them to the concept of timing, speed, and balance,
which are foundational for understanding physics and geometry later on.
