These are my answers that I used to achieve a 94/100 raw marks on the Year 12 Unit 1 Criminology controlled assessment which then resulted in me getting 100/100 UMS marks. When completing my controlled assessment, these answers were the structure I used however I changed it according to the brief. This resource covers AC 2.2. This answer got me 15/15 after sending it to my teachers for detailed feedback.

AC2.2 Evaluate the effectiveness of media used in campaigns for change.

Blogs are a regularly updated webpage that is often ran by a person or a group of people. It is
typically seen as informal and conversational. An advantage of blogs is that they are very interactive
because you can donate, share and comment on them. You are also able to contribute to a cause you
feel deeply about which allows for members of the public to engage. Another advantage is that they
are also up to date and informative about specific causes. They also let the public know about
specific protests that are going on which allows for the public to attend and participate. A further
advantage is that it can also be condensed which allows for people to not feel overwhelmed by the
information they receive and is relatively user friendly. More and more people are able to
understand and read the blogs. Nearly 8 in 10 internet users read blogs which shows a vast majority
of people use blogs, meaning a message can be spread easily. However, a disadvantage of blogs is
that it can be biased in some cases because it only shows one opinion. They’re also trying to
influence people’s view because it doesn’t give a full picture. There is a potential risk of the views
being radical and include misinformation which would skew the views of the public. This could mean
that blogs are not trusted by members of the public. Another disadvantage it’s often used amongst
younger people. People aged 51 and older only make up 7.1% of age groups that use blogs which
means it doesn’t allow for a wider range of audience. A further disadvantage is that there isn’t much
media coverage surrounding blogs so people may not know they are easily accessible. This means
they’d have to search for the blog which isn’t convenient in some cases. One campaign that has
effectively used blogs is ‘Campaigns Against Climate Change.’ It has various links regarding upcoming
events (which allows for people to come), latest tweets (which showcases their broad support) and
their contact information. They’ve also used picture which is visually appealing to the public and
helps them to further acknowledge what the campaign is trying to achieve. They regularly post on
their Twitter about various climate change resources and frequently link their blog in their posts.
They have over 17,000 posts relating to their campaign and 12.4k followers which allows for a vast
following to see their posts hence promoting more awareness towards climate change. They also
have their blog and email linked in their bio which makes the public able to reach them properly.

Viral messaging is a way of media that involved passing messages from person to person on social
media. An example is on WhatsApp or Messenger. A person may spread the message who then
spread it further and so on thus forming a chain mail. An advantage of viral messaging is that it gets a
message across easily. Other people can share it so a wide range of audience can know about it
which allows for more coverage to the issue. Another advantage is that it’s cost effective. Money isn’t
used to share posts which means it’s inexpensive and can also be shared through a range of people.
It is accessible to all since anyone can use it for their campaigns. A further advantage is that it’s easy
to create since you won’t have to require a large amount of effort to create it. You can spread your
opinion and it’s able to access an international audience. However a disadvantage of viral messaging
is that it only provides minimal information so it isn’t detailed. People aren’t likely to share if they
don’t know what the cause is about. Another disadvantage is that it is hard to quantify results. This is
because it relies on consumers choosing to spread the content hence the outcome is unpredictable,
and you wouldn’t be able to measure the success of the campaign because it can be shared multiple
times or perhaps not at all. A further disadvantage is that people could edit the message which will
give the wrong impression and will either add or take away important information. An example of a
campaign that used viral messaging was ‘#MeToo’. This was a worldwide campaign that came about
due to Harvey Weinstein. He was a man who was very popular in the Hollywood industry and had
been exposed by the New York Times for multiple accusations of sexual assault. They have a verified
Twitter account (@MeTooMVMT) with 96.8k followers. They constant tweet daily about support for
survivors of sexual assault which shows that they are constantly engaging with the public about their
campaign. Through their Twitter bio, their message is made very clear: “Working towards eradicating
