adulthood
erikson's theory:
•(ego) integrity vs. despair - 60+
•life review is an essential piece of this final stage
•as individuals reflect on their life, if the evaluation is positive,
they feel integrity, if evaluation is filled with regret or
disappointment they feel despair
late adulthood adjustment theories:
•disengagement theory: suggests that one gradually withdraws
from society, increase self occupation, decrease emotional ties
with others, show less interest in societal affairs
•not a positive theory or generally accepted
activity theory:
•the more active and involved... the more likely individuals are
to be satisfied with their lives
•successful aging is associated with being relatively active,
involved, and productive
socioemotional selectivity theory:
•older adults become more selective about their social networks
•spend more time with familiar individuals with whom they
have rewarding relationships
selective optimization with compensation theory:
•successful aging is related to 3 main factors: selection,
optimization, and compensation
1. selection: older adults have reduced capacity and loss of
functioning, requiring a reduction in performance in most of
life domains
