Classroom Goals
You can use Broadcast News to teach your students…
• Ethical considerations in reporting news stories.
• How to find the news through one-on-one interviews, news conferences, press releases, online
resources, futures files, and document searches.
• Practical techniques in covering spot news, researching stories, and advancing ongoing news
items.
• The proper mechanics and style of writing news stories, including how to craft leads that convey
the correct tone for the individual news report.
• The technology used in professional newsrooms, in the field, and with news wire services.
• The preferred techniques to produce and deliver a typical 30-minute newscast.
• How radio newscasts have evolved and how a local newscaster remains competitive in the
changing marketplace.
• An overview of global news sources.
• Technological considerations of how convergence and new delivery methods are impacting
news gathering and reporting.

Educational outcomes for typical courses using this text include:

• Familiarity with the responsibilities and roles of various positions in the field of production.
• A working ability to produce materials in a timely manner and of quality relative to
demonstrated proficiency.
• News gathering, researching, and editing skills.
• Ability to work under deadline pressure while adhering to stylistic and factual constraints.
• Familiarity with script analysis and delivery.

Relating the Book to the Classroom
Broadcast News Writing, Reporting and Producing is divided into four major sections. These sections
flow with the progression of building a newscast from locating news stories all the way through
delivering the final news product on the air. Along the way, students will learn how to collect
information, create news stories, and produce a newscast for either radio or television audiences.

The four sections are in modular format, thus they need not be followed sequentially. For example, a
course that concentrates on broadcast writing may concentrate on the first two sections, while a news
production course may focus on the latter two. However, this text is designed to provide comprehensive
knowledge of local newscast production during the course of a typical academic semester.

The four book sections (and their chapters) are divided into the following modules:
