The Basics (each question worth 5 point) 20 pts total
1. From the first section in the book what are 5 environmental concerns you will learn about in
this class? Question worth 5 points.
a. Health and Hunger
b. Biodiversity Loss
c. Pollution
d. Climate Change
e. Water Quality and Quantity
2. Every field is impacted by the environment, be it being the source or a product, source of a
service, a concern to meet an environmental regulation…. How do you feel learning about
the environment will impact your future career? (minimum of 50 words; question worth 5
points)
The environment has a profound impact on everyone, and I believe that the environment will
always triumph over human activity, regardless of where you live, what job you have, or how
much money you have. Learning about the environment has an impact on everyone's future job,
as does the state of our environment. This, I believe, will benefit me the most in my social work
career since understanding the social consequences of the environment will allow me to better
understand individuals and reach out to more communities. For example, in countries struggling
with water pollution/supply, being able to bring my own expertise and empower others with that
knowledge is critical for change to occur, as well as for me to begin changing.
3. Everything is made from chemicals. In blogs or news articles, you might hear about
chemicals being a concern, but this is too vague. For example you can say water is a problem
because it is a chemical, but this is still not saying why. Find an example of a chemical you
want to learn about. Question worth 5 points
a. What is this chemical made from? This chemical can be created by living organisms
in a variety of forms.
b. How can it be helpful? It is not helpful, rather it can have a significant negative
impact on human life; it is a danger to humans.
c. What it is likely to pollute (air, water, or land)? Biotoxins, such as marine biotoxins,
are likely to damage the air and can be detected in water.
d. How can the problem be lessened? Conducting thorough testing to ensure low
consumption. Early warning and monitoring are carried out so that biotoxins can be
identified and public communication about this chemical can begin quickly.
