A Statement is a sentence that is either true or false (not both)
Ex: London is the capital of England - True
William S. wrote Modern Family - False
As long as a sentence is true or false it’s a statement; commands, questions and
opinions are NOT statements.
Symbolic logic uses lowercase letters such as p, q, r, and s to represent statements.
The negation is the opposite of the statement
True statement negation = False statement and the reverse
Ex: statement- Some Art majors have long hair
Negation- No Art majors have long hair
The negation of statement p is expressed by writing ~p. This is read as “not p” or
“It is not true p.”
The words all, some, and none = quantifiers
A statement that contains one of these words is a quantified statement
Simple Statements convey one idea with no connecting words
Statements formed by combining two or more simple statements are called
compound statements
Words called connectives are used to join simple statements to form a compound
