BISC 131 Lab Final: Exam #5 Questions
and Answers
Wavelength - Answer -the distance from peak to peak in the wave
photons - Answer -A particle of light. They carry energy and therefore light carries
energy to the things that it shines o
Pigments - Answer -capable of absorbing light (and the energy from it).
chlorphyll - Answer -Some organisms are able to harness the energy of photons to
power chemical reactions in their cells. In most organisms that do this, the pigment used
is _______________________________
Photosynthesis - Answer -Light energy harnessed by chlorophyll molecules is most
commonly used by living things to power chemical reactions that build molecules of
glucose, a simple sugar, from carbon dioxide gas.
6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy -> C6H12O6 = 6O2 Carbon Water From Glucose Oxygen
Dioxide Photons
Hypothesis? - Answer -Plants that do not receive purple, blue, orange or red light will
perform photosynthesis less efficiently than those exposed to light of all wavelengths
Plants that do not receive yellow or green light will perform photosynthesis as efficiently
than those exposed to light of all wavelengths
Control variables? - Answer -
Experimental variables? - Answer -
Experimental set up: - Answer -Prepare 400 mL of a solution of 0.25% sodium
bicarbonate in tap water (this will be slightly more than you actually need, but that's
okay). We usually use distilled or deionized water for our lab experiments but for this
week it's important that the plants have some of the ions that are present in tap water.
Remember that sodium bicarbonate will be a source of carbon for these plants to
perform photosynthesis. Transfer 200 mL of your 0.25% sodium bicarbonate solution to
a new beaker. Add 4 drops (an imprecise measurement, but good enough for the
purposes here) of food dye. Stir using a stirring rod or pipette.
