Elements of music
• Duration
o Length in time of a sound.
o Some are l-o-n-g & s-u-s-t-a-i-n-e-d.
o Others short & quick.
o Involves:
▪ beat & accent
- music has a regular beat.
- tap foot & clap hands to beat.
- a.k.a. heartbeat of music.
- accents: beats that are more prominent than others.
- identify no. of beats per bar
▪ note values
- length of tone indicated w/ symbol reflecting its “note value”.
- Silence as important as sound & indicated w/ symbol: rest.
▪ meter
- beats grouped in twos, threes, fours.
- refer to particular grouping as meter.
- indicated at beginning of music piece w/ time signature.
- time signature: 2 no. written vertically.
, - top no.: no. of beats per bar.
- bottom no.: indicates note value of each beat
▪ rhythm
- basis of rhythm: duration of a musical tone.
- rhythm created: combining tones w/ dif. durations.
▪ tempo
- the speed of music.
- very fast, fast, moderate, very slow, slow.
- can get gradually faster/gradually slower.
• Pitch
o Highness/lowness of a tonal sound.
o Sounds created when musical instrument causes vibration.
o High-pitched sounds: vibrations are fast.
o Low-pitched sounds: vibrations are slow.
o Melody
▪ linear succession of various tones.
▪ melody moves through tones.
o Tonic solfa
▪ system to indicate pitch levels.
